Sculpture By The Sea

Hello! Me here again, your resident blogger- just incase you’ve forgotten. Which, actually, maybe you have as it’s been ages since I last wrote. I’m so sorry. But the book proposal, which has been taking up every spare minute of my time, is now off (wish me luck). So now I can focus all my attention on you lovely people and getting this blog back to what it’s supposed to be- full of shiny happy stuff!

First and foremost: Sculpture By The Sea, which opened yesterday. The world’s largest, free, outdoor exhibit; it’s transformed 2kms of the Bondi to Tamarama coastline walk with alien landings, mini caterpillars, igloos and such stuff. From the big to the minutely small; from the fun to the thought-provoking; from the poignant to the plain weird- if you’re in town, I definitely recommend you go.

Rachel Couper and Ivana Kuzmanovska’s Mirador is one of my favourites- a large dome filled with perspex that glistens and dances with the reflection of sun and sea. While ‘Mengenang’ (memory), which consists of 222 bamboo bird-scarers, is a beautiful reflection on the 222 lives lost in the Bali bombings.

Ultimately, it’s just so much fun seeing art outdoors rather than cooped up in the stale light of a gallery. Everything looks different as the sky changes from dusk to dawn, windy to calm… It feels free. Yesterday as I popped along for a wander, I even saw a whale (my first one ever!). I’ll take that over being eerily eye-balled by some poor, very bored gallery assistant any day.

  1. I love these pictures you have taken. Unfortunately it’s a bit far to pop over from London but thanks for the insight!
