Exhibit Preview: Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Young

From Serge Gainsbourg to Andy Warhol to the Dalai Lama; society photographer Richard Young is a master of the celebrity snapshot but none captured his heart quite the way Elizabeth Taylor did. Ahead of his exhibit, Elizabeth Taylor by Richard Young, at his gallery  (4 Holland Street, London, W8 4LT; 4th – 29th September 2012) here’s a sneak preview of some of his intimate pictures.

Covering the starlets career for almost 40 years, as he told The Guardian, she was his first published photograph. “I had gatecrashed the party Elizabeth was holding for Richard Burton’s 50th birthday. I took this photo (see below, top left), Taylor noticed me and stormed over and said: ‘I think you should leave … now.’ That was the beginning of my career.”

The kiss picture came to immortalise her and Burton’s passionate, tumultuous, relationship. “Some weeks later”, he continues, “someone from her office rang me and asked for a copy of the photograph, so I guess she loved it too!”

Despite the grand dame’s protest that : “No one is going to play Elizabeth Taylor, but Elizabeth Taylor herself,” a bio-pic starring Lindsay Lohan is currently in production.

I, somehow, think she would have preferred Young’s retrospect.

  1. Thank you, I have just been searching for info on the exhibit and yours is the best I’ve stumbled upon. Love that woman! If only they still made stars like her.
