6 Small Space Solutions

Posted by Suzi | March 19, 2013

Ok this is an exciting first for the blog…we have a competition!! Sponsored by Lombok, a UK furniture company, which specialises in Eastern inspired furniture (and REALLY pretty decor accessories), they want to give one lucky little reader £300 to spend on their online store.

Only UK residents can enter (you can see all the t&cs below), so if you live overseas, make sure you tell all your UK-based family and friends. I’m also very happy to offer the winner complimentary styling advice for their purchases.

So go ahead and enter in the comments section below! What is your favourite small space? Maybe it’s a cute little cafe you like to curl up in? The spare room at your mum’s house? The garden shed?

I really look forward to reading all your responses and hope those that can’t enter will enjoy the small space solutions anyways. Who doesn’t need more room at home?

  1. My favourite small space is curling up on the rug in front of the fire!! BLISS!

  2. I love this! I’m going to use some of the tips. Mirrors- genius! My favourite small space is my old room at my parents home, it no longer holds all of my old stuff, but over the years I have collected things that I want to use when I buy my first home, including a gorgously cosy jade armchair, when I visit home I sit in that armchair and look forward to the future!

  4. My entire flat is a small space! I suppose I love the little corner in my living room with my bookcase and some old wooden chairs stacked up. It’s a cosy little spot and I’d like to make more of it!

  5. My favourite small space is the tiny roof terrace in my London home. I rarely go up there but when I do, it means summer is here and I love London in the sunshine! We have a rustic metal table and chairs ready for summer 2013… I’m checking out the Lombok site for some fab lanterns, this one is particularily pretty!

  8. My favourite small space is the beautiful armchair I bought on a whim to cheer myself up one day – best money I ever spent! It’s perfect for curling up with a good book and a cup of tea/wine! xxx

  9. Difficult to think of my favourite small space but the one that springs to mind is Ruby’s in Dalston. It’s an awesome wee cocktail bar in a basement on Kingsland Road. Amazing atmosphere in this dark little den, and of course the drinks are amazing! Love the fact that some of the cocktails are served in old 1940s style milk bottles and other random vessels!

  10. I have just moved into my first new home and LOVE the lombak site. I would have my say my favourate small space is under my bed, we have sourced a range of wooden, blue and green vintage cases which you can just see poking out underneath to store all the bedding/ towels etc in. Some of them are still empty but I know over the years they will be filled too!

  12. My Favorite small space is one with the best view I have ever seen. It was a small shack on silts, elevated above the crystal clear seas of the Pacific Ocean. Although the shack was simply decorated using local bamboo and straw materials, swaying in the white woven hammock on the balcony and watching the sunset, was the most serene space I will ever be in.

  13. The shelves in my bedroom. Filled with favourite books and things I’ve picked up in London and travelling abroad.

  14. BED. Or my fridge filled with delicious things.

  15. My favourite small space was the pantry at Grandma’s on Monday nights. Nothing to do with the fact that she always kept the cake for that night there … honest!

  16. My favourite small space is curling up at the end of the day with my two year old son for story time. We sit together on a lovely battered old leather armchair I picked up years ago at a vicarage garage sale of all places. Sitting on that little chair we get to travel off to meet The Gruffalo, see The Tiger that Came for Tea or even catch up with The Jolly Postman, it’s the most magical part of my day.

  17. My favourite small space has to be in ‘my’ corner of the couch, with my little cat sat perched on my knee. Our corner group couch is so comfy, but I get the small corner, whilst the long corner is taken up by my other half. I like to be cosy, he likes to sprall!

  18. my favourite small space was my very very tiny flat in the cloisters of the biggest church in london (after st paul’s). the contrast of the small space and the huge church was really comforting

  19. We have had to down size our home so my small space has to be a corner in the garden where I can watch the birds and the squirrels playing. Fantastic.

  20. I have a teeny tiny galley kitchen in my London flat. I’ve lived there for five years, and my friends are always amazed at what i can produce out of such a little space. I realised recently that it is my happy place, standing at the counter, whisking something up with a spring breeze coming through the window and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack playing – heaven!

  21. The small space where my tea is stored…tea has so many benefits and can be enjoyed in everyones favourite small space…I am glad I wasn’t born before tea :) xxx

  22. My favourite small space…we have a little storage cupboard in my family home below the stairs (for bikes and what not) but when i was in primary school i moved everything out of there and set up a desk so i could pretend i was my Dad working in an office. I used to pretend i was making millions and millions of pounds (using monopoly money). Every time i go in there when i am home to grab a jacket or a bike i have a chuckle to myself!

  23. Right now, my favourite small space is my shower where I can lose myself in steamy goodness and wash away a day’s work before snuggling into my hoodie and tracky bums for a night chilling out at home. BLISS!!!!

  24. My favourite space is my attic, it is an aladdins cave of things I cannot part with and know will be used at some point in time. It is not the biggest of attics, it really is quite a small space, but very organised so I know where everything is in the boxes that are up there.

I have to admit that I am in no way a hoarder, I have kept many treasures from my past, ranging from my childhood, teens and adulthood. There are so many memories up in my attic, that sometimes it is nice to pull the ladders out, pop on a chunky cardi (its quite cold up there) and a hot choc, and sit in peace looking through old photographs.

Everyone needs their very own space… I share mine with a few spiders, but I can call it my own little slice of peaceful bliss

  25. Great article Suzi… I’ve been trying to justify the amount of mirrors we have in our london basement flat for years, they are to reflect light not for vanity purposes!
My favourite small space is the alcove under the stairs in our sitting room which we’ve turned into a play area for our daughter. All the bulky toys fit surprisingly well, and after a coat of slate grey paint, a few spotlights and plenty of antique mirrors of all different shapes and sizes and colours its an aladins cave of interest to keep her entertained for hours. Thus our tiny little living rooms stays toy free!

  26. My favourite small space is the window seat of Waterstones bookshop, Islington Green. Perfectly placed in the sun and surrounded by the travel guide section. Its my ‘happy’ place (unless some other like-minded tinker has stolen my seat!)

    Comment by Liz Parry — March 25, 2013 #

  27. My favourite small space has to be the bathroom (which I’m surprised no one has mentioned!). It’s the only true hideaway in my home, by being the only door which I can actually lock.

There’s nothing better than after a hectic day, unwinding and rinsing away your stresses during a long soak! Per-Fection!
